    Lagebeschreibung

Dortmund's port is an inland port in the city of Dortmund's Innenstadt-Nord administrative district. The port also gives its name to one of the statistical districts in the Innenstadt-Nord administrative district, and which is characterised as a densely populated residential and business district. The port was opened on 11 August 1899 by Kaiser Wilhelm II, at the same time as the Dortmund-Ems canal. With effect from 10 June 1939, the city of Dortmund spun the port, which it had previously operated itself, out of municipal ownership and converted it into a public limited company - the Dortmunder Hafen AG. It was severely damaged in the second world war, but reopened in 1946 so that the city could receive the building materials that were urgently required for rebuilding the city. Today, the northern port basins (Südhafen, Kohlenhafen and Petroleumhafen) represent one of the largest logistical hubs in Europe. Speicherstraße is also home to cultural institutions and restaurants. Since 2019, the city council has encouraged start-ups and other businesses to make their home here. Excellent public transport links and access to the A45 motorway.
