Hilden lies to the west of the city of Solingen and south-east of the state capital Düsseldorf, and with around 57,000 inhabitants is the fourth-largest town in the Mettmann administrative district. The town borders Erkrath to the north, Haan to the north-east, Solingen to the east and south-east, Langenfeld to the south and Düsseldorf to the west.
