This district lies around four kilometres north of the city centre, and is dominated by industry in its western area, and residential areas and retail in the centre. There are also attractive parks in the eastern part of the district. The Altenessener Straße forms the centre of the district, and in the area around the Altenessen local rail station has undergone improvements. The underground rail line has been extended further to the north and on to Gelsenkirchen. The station square has been redesigned and new residential, office and retail buildings have been constructed. The Allee-Center shopping centre by the Altenessen-Mitte underground station offers a wide range of shops and services.
