    Lagebeschreibung

    Whereas the town’s motto was once ‘the industrial town among greenery’, due to more than 60% of the town’s area being greenery, the closure of all the coal mines, along with structural changes, means that only the greenery part of the slogan remains, now instead prepended by ‘the European town’. Castrop-Rauxel borders the following areas, clockwise starting from north: Recklinghausen, Datteln, Waltrop (all in the Recklinghausen administrative district), Dortmund, Bochum and Herne. The A2 (Oberhausen–Berlin), A42 (Kamp-Lintfort–Dortmund) and A45 (Dortmund–Aschaffenberg) motorways all run through the town. The A42 meets the A45 at the Castrop-Rauxel-Ost motorway intersection. The B235 main road (Senden (Westfalen)–Witten), with its connections to the A40 and B1, crosses through the town from north to south.
